What Title Should You Use to Recruit iPhone App Developers?
You want someone to build your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV app. So what the heck do you call the job? Is this person an:
iOS Developer
Swift Developer
App Developer
Mobile Developer
Objective-C Developer
or Simply an iPhone / iPad / Apple TV Developer?
Or maybe you're making apps with a third-party platform. So do you call them an:
Xamarin Developer
App Developer
Mobile Developer
React Native Developer
Flutter Developer
or just an iOS Developer?
My Thoughts
If you're recruiting a native app developer, I suggest using "iOS developer" in your job title. Based on my experience, most of us search for iOS developer jobs, not Swift or Objective-C jobs. The majority of the listings seem to lean that way as well.
Few of us would call ourselves Swift or Objective-C developers because so few projects use only one language. Even a "pure" Swift iOS app almost certainly interacts with the Objective-C runtime, which is key to many native iOS frameworks like UIKit. Many native iOS projects are a mix of Objective-C, Swift, and sometimes even include C++, Lua, or Javascript.
If you're looking for a developer for a third-party mobile platform, then you may wish to use the name of the platform in the job title. For instance, you might hire a Xamarin or Flutter developer. If you use the title "iOS Developer" to recruit a Flutter expert, you will probably attract mostly native developers who aren't interested or lack experience in Flutter.
